SUMMARY:Birding at the Village Creek Drying Beds is Cancelled until Further notice (open this event to read more)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: The Village Creek Bird Walks are canceled until further notice. The city of Fort Worth\, the FW Water Department  and the Environmental Protection Agency have responded to an oil spill in early May.  A 16-inch crude oil pipeline ruptured\, releasing 2\,600 barrels of oil into a municipal sewer line that is part of Fort Worth’s wastewater system. The clean-up resulted in discharging the collected sludge waste at the Village Creek Drying Bed. The process to remove the waste is to let the sludge dry\, then dredge the waste and dispose of it properly. This is what the beds were used for before the more modern mechanical waste treatment plants were developed. The frequent rains that occurred in May and June has slowed the drying process. Hopefully the beds will be reopened to visitors and bird watchers after the oil waste product is safely removed.  \nJoin Jim Sipiora as he explores the Village Creek Drying Beds on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. The drying beds are located on Green Oaks Blvd. in north Arlington just west of the River Legacy Park entrance. Meet everyone at the Dunlop Sports Center parking lot at 1500 NW Green Oaks Blvd. The parking lot is located across the street from the gate to the drying beds facility. Walking is mostly on level gravel and paved roads\, with some excursions through tall grass. Bring insect repellent if it rained recently. \nStart times at the parking lot: \nOctober through May\, meet at 8:30 AM \nJune through September\, meet at 6:30 AM.

SUMMARY:Birding at the Village Creek Drying Beds in north Arlington

SUMMARY:May 2025 FWAS General Meeting: The Language of Birds presented by Nathan Pieplow
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday night at 7:00 PM for our last monthly meeting before the summer break. \nThe program will be The Language of Bird\, presented by Nathan Pieplow from the University of Colorado. Nathan is the author of the Peterson Field Guide to Bird Sounds and author of the bird sound blog Earbirding.com. \nAll around us\, all the time\, the birds are telling us who they are and what they are doing. In this talk Nathan unlocks the secrets of their language. You’ll listen in on the pillow talk of a pair of Red-winged Blackbirds\, and learn the secret signals that Cliff Swallows use when they have found food. You’ll learn how one bird sound can have many meanings\, and how one meaning can have many sounds—and how\, sometimes\, the meaning isn’t in the sounds at all. This talk from the author of the Peterson Field Guide to Bird Sounds is an accessible\, entertaining introduction to a fascinating topic. \nThis meeting will be both an in-person and streamed on-line event. SUMMARY:Thursday\, May 8\, 2025: FWAS Big Sit! at Richland Creek WMA
DESCRIPTION:NOTE:   For the volunteers who registered for this event\, Ted had to reschedule to May 8\, 2025.\nRain date will be May 9th. \nJoin Ted Drozdowski and other Ft. Worth Audubon team members as we take part in this year’s 29th Annual Great Texas Birding Classic. Our count circle will be at the Richland Creek Wildlife Management Area\, about 25 miles east of Corsicana\, on the Navarro/Freestone County line. This year Ted is inviting more folks to participate. As with all Big Sits\, we plan on being there from dawn to dusk\, but participants are free to come and go as they please. We were forced to cancel our participation in 2024 due to flooding from all of last spring’s unseasonal rains. In 2023\, our team won 1st place in our division with 96 species! We hope to top that this year.  \nThe cost is $30.00 which includes this year’s official GTBC t-shirt. Please note\, if our dates are rained out\, the registration fee is non-refundable. You will still receive a great t-shirt. Proceeds from your registration support bird habitat and education programs in Texas. \nTo sign up\, contact Ted Drozdowski at drozdovekie@sbcglobal.net\, or call (817) 908-6897. Ted will select the exact location at the WMA as the date draws closer. He looks for the best location to see the marsh and the nearby woodlands. \nParticipants will also need a ‘Limited Public Use’ permit to access the WMAs. Go online to  https://www.txfgsales.com/CustomerSearch.aspx\, enter the data\, and select the LPU Permit Item 175. the permit cost $12 a year\, and expires August 31 of each year. It is good for access to all WMAs in Texas.  \n
