SUMMARY:February 2026 General Meeting: Feather Trails: A Journey of Discovery Among Endangered Birds with Sophie A. H. Osborn
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, February 12\, 2026 for our General Meeting. Tonight’s program will be Feather Trails: A journey of discovery among endangered birds\, with Sophie A. H. Osborn\, an award-winning environmental writer and wildlife biologist whose work has included the study and conservation of more than a dozen bird species in the Americas.  \nSophie will discuss how birds are visible\, vocal sentinels that alert us to environmental harms through their declining numbers or their failure to thrive. In her new book Feather Trails—A Journey of Discovery Among Endangered Birds\, she shares her personal experiences reintroducing endangered Peregrine Falcons\, Hawaiian Crows\, and California Condors to the wild. While immersing readers in the triumphs and tribulations of being a wildlife biologist\, Sophie explores the threats that imperiled these birds\, and reveals that what harmed them threatens us\, too. She will discuss what led to the endangerment of these three captivating species\, recount the efforts of biologists to recover their populations\, and read a few excerpts from her book that describe what it was like to work with these magnificent birds. \nThis will be both a live in-person meeting and streamed on Zoom. Click here for the on-line Zoom link. \nPlease remember to give yourself extra time to arrive as the road construction might still have the entrance to the parking lot from Camp Bowie Blvd. closed. Montgomery Street is also under construction. Since I drive from downtown Ft Worth\, I take West 7th Street to get to Clifton Street and the parking lot.

SUMMARY:NEW! Settler's Park\, Grapevine\, (formerly Silverlake) with Jim Sipiora
DESCRIPTION:Go exploring with Jim Sipiora at a new park in east Grapevine near Grapevine Lake. The city has not officially listed this park on their website yet. But folks on eBird have been there several times and listed it as a Hotspot. If you use the address listed on Google maps you will see directions on how to get to the park. \nJim and other local birders have visited the park a few times this winter and reported on eBird that there are Greater Scaup. There is a short 0.75 mile trail around the lake with some woodlands. \nCurrently\, Google Maps shows the entrance and small parking area are on Bass Pro Court. If there is not enough parking available in the park\, there may be ample parking across the street at the Hilton Hotel. But be aware if there are No Parking signs at the Hilton then you may have to park on the street.

SUMMARY:January 2026 General Meeting: Electric Vehicle Myths and FUD (Fear\, Uncertainty\, Doubt)\, An Owner’s Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, January 8\, 2026\, for our first meeting to usher in a new year. Tonight’s meeting topic is Electric Vehicle Myths and FUD (Fear\, Uncertainty\, Doubt)\, An Owner’s Perspective presented by Eric Pratt. Eric will discuss how electric vehicles are challenging the status quo for transportation. Myths and FUD are used to slow EV adoption\, and they often are less than truthful. The presentation sorts fact from fiction. \nThis will be both a live in-person meeting and streamed on Zoom.

SUMMARY:26th Annual Village Creek Drying Beds Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Come out and join one of our teams to conduct the annual Village Creek Drying Beds (VCDB) Christmas Bird Count (CBC.) This is the 126th Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count\, and the 26th time FWAS participated at VCDB. Contact avianadmin@fwas.org\, and we will connect you with the Count Leader Gabriele Saleh. She will help you join one of the teams. \nA CBC may sound daunting to the inexperienced birder\, but it is actually a great way to improve birding skills and learn from the more experienced birders in our chapter. EXTRA EYES are the most helpful tool when participating in a bird count. Not knowledge of bird species. \nThe Village Creek Drying Beds CBC is a count circle centered at the drying beds on Green Oaks Blvd. in north Arlington. The resulting 15-mile diameter circle allows teams to look for birds on the south end of DFW airport\, the Colleyville Nature Center\, the many city parks in H-E-B\, and the many city parks in Arlington including Lake Arlington\, Village Breek Natural Area\, and habitat along the West Fork Trinity River over to Irving/Grand Prairie. There are only 7 to 8 teams tems in all. But we would love to add more to cover additional parks in this urban environment.

SUMMARY:December 2025 General Meeting: The Nature of Arctic Birds presented by Jean Iron
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, December 11th for our last General Meeting of 2025. \n We will also be hosting a Special Activity tonight! Joy Havner suggested a Bird Shirt Showdown. Wear your best (G-rated please) bird shirt\, Christmas themed if you have it. We want to see those shirts from those joining us virtually as well. \nThe program is The Nature of Arctic Birds\, presented by Jean Iron. Arctic birds have a special attraction for birders and many are amongst our most sought-after species. In this presentation\, Jean will take us north to the Arctic to look at birds whose exceptional endurance and lifestyle are determined by the relentless forces of nature. Physical adaptations of Arctic birds\, their colour schemes\, short breeding season\, populations\, and impressive migrations\, including the swimming migration of Thick-billed Murres\, are characteristics that Jean will highlight with photos. \nThis will be both a live in-person meeting with our speaker joinng us on Zoom.  \nJean is a well-known Ontario birder. She was president of the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) for nine years and editor of its newsletter for 14. In 2016\, she received the OFO Distinguished Ornithologist Award.
