DESCRIPTION:Join Karen Rice and others as they explore this Grapevine\, TX\, city park. Parr Park is located along Bear Creek and the Bear Creek Trail. SUMMARY:November 2026 General Meeting: "Soaring over the suburbs - Mississippi kites in Texas and beyond" by Ben Skipper
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our November General Meeting on Thursday\, November 12th. The meeting will begin at 7:00 PM. The meeting will be a live\, in-person event and also streamed on our Zoom channel. The link for Zoom meetings for all of 2026 – 2027 will be the same unless othwerwise noted. Check our Events Calendar for each meeting if changes are made. \nThe program tonight will be Soaring over the suburbs – Mississippi kites in Texas and Beyond presented by Dr. Ben Skipper. Mississippi Kites have undergone major shifts in distribution and abundance over the last century\, including the colonization of urban areas\, first in the Great Plains and later in eastern regions. They are now among the most abundant urban-breeding raptors in North America. Their urban presence has created opportunities for ecological research and for public appreciation of raptors\, but it has also led to occasional conflicts when nesting birds aggressively defend their territories in parks and other green spaces. Although these incidents are rare\, they often attract disproportionate attention and may foster negative attitudes toward kites and other raptors. Despite their growing abundance\, important aspects of Mississippi Kite natural history\, including population genetic structure\, migration\, and overwintering ecology\, remain poorly understood. \nPlease note: we are meeting in a new room and building location at UNT Health of Fort Worth. (heck\, even the school name has changed!) The school has also instructed us to use Parking Lot 19 for our meetings. Click here for a PDF with new driving and parking instructions.  MAP \nClick here to go to the Zoom streaming channel link.
