2024 Lake Waxahachie Big Sit, October 12
October 12 @ 6:30 am - 8:30 pm
Join Ted Drozdowski for the Annual Lake Waxahachie Big Sit! event will be on Saturday, Oct 12, 2024! This will be the 11th fall Big Sit on the western end of Lake Waxahachie in central Ellis County. The Big Sit! is a semi-competitive birding event originated by the New Haven Bird Club in 1992. Participants stay in a 17-foot diameter circle and count species of birds from that circle. The Big Sit has been called “Birding’s Tailgate Party!”
Participants are free to come at any time of the day and for any length of duration as we will be manning the circle from dawn to dusk. Bring a chair, binoculars, scope if you have one, a hat, and sunscreen if you need it. We will have shade tents and there will be large coolers to keep food and drink cold down at the lake. You should bring your own snacks, beverages, and food if you’re going to be around awhile. The west end of Lake Waxahachie is a great birding location and about anything can show up here. The current bird list here stands at 234 species. Last year we tied our 2015 fall record of 75 species, and our ten year cumulative total for our fall Big Sit is now 121 species. Our new raised birding platform faces north, giving us a nice vantage point for migrating birds over the lake. There are mudflats, lots of willow trees, thickets, towering cottonwoods and a feeding station with a drip. This is a relaxing place to spend the day watching birds while building your Ellis County list. Every year is different, but some good birds always show up.
