April 2024 General Meeting: Wind and Wildlife: An Overview of the Interactions of Wildlife with Wind Turbines
April 11 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Join us on Thursday, April 11, 2024 for our General Meeting. Our guest speaker will be Terry VanDeWalle, Senior Principal Biologist at Stantec Consulting Services. The topic is:
Wind and Wildlife: An Overview of the Interactions of Wildlife with Wind Turbines
The number of wind turbines on the landscape is increasing. As the number of turbines grows, the potential for wildlife/turbine interactions grows as well. This talk will provide an overview of wind/wildlife interactions, wildlife regulations affecting wind projects, and measures that can be taken by wind farm owners to reduce bird and bat mortality at operating wind farms.
Terry has over 30 years of experience specializing in animal and natural areas surveys, herpetology, threatened and endangered species surveys, Endangered Species Act Consultation, wetland delineation and permitting, wetland mitigation design and monitoring, and coordination of environmental impact statements and assessments. He has been conducting pre- and post-construction wildlife surveys and permitting at wind farms for 17 years. In addition, he has been involved with wildlife rehabilitation in the Midwest for over 25 years and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Wildlife Center and is an Adjunct Professor at Hawkeye Community College where he teaches a course on Wildlife Ecology.
NOTE: This will be a hybrid meeting. Members are encouraged to meet at our ‘live’ location where the speaker will be Live Streamed on Zoom. See the Zoom Link on our Homepage.
